Dr. Dimitris N. Chryssochoou (Professor of Theory and Institutions of European Integration, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences), "A European polity out of many?"

This seminar presentation looks at the nature and dynamics of the EU ‘polity’ as a case of collective ordered symbiosis. In addressing the dialectical interplay of ‘unity in diversity’ in relation to Europe’s emergent but still ambivalent claims to ‘demos-formation’, it raises the question: what kind of theorizing can grasp the current state of union? A possible answer is through the conceptual lens of ‘organized synarchy’, in the sense that the EU has preserved a balance between unity and plurality through an advanced system of co-determination which, at this particular stage of its polity evolution, is reflective of a general view of the whole: a condition of ordered symbiosis among co-evolving polities, which is not about their subordination to a superior centre, but rather about their preservation as distinctive but constituent units; it is about a common association which retains its character as an ordered plurality.
