DR. JOHANNA KRASCHITZER (University of Graz Institute for Archaeology) „Archaia Pheneos after Antiquity. Medieval Findings and Written Sources“
Excavations carried out in 2011–2015 on the hill of the ancient city of Pheneos revealed not only a
late classical city wall, but also medieval finds. On the summit of the acropolis the foundations of a
medieval tower are still visible, this fortification was mentioned in venetian lists of the 15th century.
Two burials on a ridge east of the acropolis seem to have been part of a larger graveyard, radiocarbon
dating gives a time frame of 1420 to 1460 AD. The medieval pottery and the coins found at Archaia
Pheneos are evidence of activity between the 12th or 13th and the 15th century. Written sources and
