Jutta Stroszeck, The Well Oracle in the Athenian Kerameikos: A new find and some of the consequences
In 2015, within the framework of a systematic study of water installations and sanctuaries in the Athenian Kerameikos, an oracle well was found. It is securely identified by inscriptions and thus, the site where it is situated, is the only oracle sanctuary in Athens we know of until today.
This sensational find produces a series of new questions about
-the location and function of oracles,
-the function of omphaloi in oracles
-the role and place of sacred wells and of
-the development of the Kerameikos site, which needs to be re-evaluated in the light of this new find.
The lecture will present the new find and address some of the questions resulting from it.
