Nicolai von Eggers (Postdoc, Danish Institute at Athens), "The Politics and Antipolitics of Aristotle"
Democracy and Revolution: Aristotle’s Political Ontology
Aristotle’s political theory is still at the core of contemporary political thought. Yet what was Aristotle’s political theory about? What did it seek to explain? And why does it remain relevant today when it comes to understanding and explaining politics?
In this lecture, Nicolai von Eggers Mariegaard of the Danish Institute at Athens will present the project he has been working on at the Institute for the last three years. By weaving Aristotle’s politics together with his general philosophy as well as with contemporary debates and the political situation in Classical Athens, the presentation gives a novel interpretation of Aristotle’s political theory. The lecture will focus on the importance of democracy and revolution for Aristotle’s political theory – how Aristotle understands these concepts and why these understandings are still important for us today.
