Soi Agelidis (Ruhr-Universität Bochum): Death and World Order: Implications of Hades' chthonic aspects

The significance of the modern used term “chthonic” has been and is debated extensively especially in regard to ancient deities and ritual, but still many aspects have not yet caught the attention of scholarship. Due to my special interest in Hades, the divine lord of the underworld and thus the chthonic deity par excellence one could say, in my talk I aim to outline his profile as reflected in literary and image evidence, highlight a neglected facet of his persona and finally, based on this survey, range the chthonic element of the divine in general within the universal world order. In this context also Persephone gains a major importance, especially together with her spouse as the rulers of the underworld.
