Professor David W. Rupp

David Rupp has been Director of the Institute since 2005, coming to Greece as Professor Emeritus after teaching for 30 years in the Department of Classics at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. He received an A.B. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College in Greek Art and Architecture. He has previously served as Acting Director of CAIA in 1994/5.

Over the years he has carried out archaeological fieldwork and research in Canada, the U.S., Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Israel. His current research interests include the Cypriote Chalcolithic period, the rise and development of sociopolitical complexity in Minoan Crete, the Greek altars of the Athenian Agora and the theory and practice of survey archaeology. He is the author of Peripatoi: Athenian Walks (Road Editions; 2002) which also has a Greek edition translated by his wife, Dr Metaxia Tsipopoulou, who works for the Greek Archaeological Service of the Ministry of Culture.
