Tamassos: Results of the city excavation, 1970-1981

Dr Florian Schimpf | Post-doctoral Researcher

TAMASSOS Research Project, ONISILOS Programmes UCY

The long since finished excavations at Tamassos headed by Hans-Günther Buchholz in the 1970s revealed a site crucial for our understanding of Cypro-Archaic and Cypro-Classical urban environments, which unfortunately remained unpublished and essentially unknown. When Buchholz passed away in 2011, only the necropolis had been published. Research on the city excavation was not pursued further, until I was offered the opportunity to study Buchholz’s records as well as the finds at the Cyprus Museum, with the aim to analyse the development of the site, to verify the function of its various buildings and to present the hitherto unknown material. This paper gives an overview of the site in general, the ongoing project in particular, and focuses in detail on the architectural remains.
