The thirteenth Johannes Sundwall Lecture will be held on November 15 at 7 p.m. The lecturer is Dr. Frederick Whitling, with a title “Greek Genius in the Roman Body” Johannes Sundwall, ‘the Grand Old Man of Classical Research in Finland’ and ‘the Great Minoan Riddle’. The lecture will be held at the Italian School of Archaeology at Athens (Parthenonos 14, 11742 Athens) and Zoom.

Since 2006, the institute has organized an annual Johannes Sundwall lecture, given by internationally acclaimed scholars who have published extensively, including on topics related to Sundwall’s own research themes.

Prof. Johannes Sundwall (1877–1966) was a Finnish ancient historian and philologist who researched in Greek and Roman literature, linear B writing, and Attic prosopography. In addition, Sundwall published studies on social history, Italian prehistory, and the history of Western Rome. The internationally acclaimed Sundwall had an influence in numerous scientific institutes and universities, working as a e.g. Docent at the University of Helsinki since 1907, Professor of Ancient History and Roman and Greek Literature at Åbo Akademi University in 1921–1945, and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Åbo Akademi University in 1931–1942. In 1937, Sundwall was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Athens.
