Event Description:

Dr. Mads Runge (Head of the research center, CENTRUM at Odense City Museums), "Harald Bluetooth's ring fortresses – the largest construction project of the Viking-Age. New results and world heritage potential"

Shortly before the turn of the first millennium, the Danish king Harald Bluetooth erects a system of identical fortresses evenly distributed throughout the Danish reign. The fortresses together constitute the largest construction work of the Viking Age, and the fortress system is the means to fulfill Harald Bluetooth’s ambition to unite the Danish reign.

In recent years, a series of new surveys is carried out on the fortresses. A new fortress has been found, another re-found and new methods put into use. At the same time new spectacular dissemination plans are in progress. Finally, the fortress system is currently in the middle of an application process hopefully leading to a serial designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All this and more will be unfolded in the lecture, which will be given by head of research center, Ph.D. Mads Runge, who is responsible for the World Heritage application.
