The Mazotos Shipwreck Project, Cyprus: Challenges and perspectives of a holistic approach to shipwreck archaeology in the 21st century
Dr Stella Demesticha | Associate Professor, Maritime Archaeology
The Mazotos Shipwreck Project, Cyprus | Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory (MARELab)

The Mazotos Shipwreck, Cyprus, dated to the first half of 4th century BC, is one of the best-preserved wreck-sites currently under excavation in the Mediterranean. The lecture will present the project’s outcomes thus far, with an emphasis to methodological strategies and research questions that have impacted research at the site over the years. Digital photogrammetry and 3D visual techniques, introduced from the beginning of the project, have opened new paths and also set specific priorities on fieldwork strategy. Several side projects have also been initiated towards a comprehensive study of the ship and the finds. In parallel, public-oriented activities made a notable contribution to our efforts for raising awareness of the protection of underwater cultural heritage and capacity building in maritime archaeology, locally and internationally.

All Monday lectures are free and open to the public, but registration is required for access to the Zoom lecture. For registration, please, click here: https://ucy.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUvd-GopjoiHtG0fdJHxFc18F5hm_-CXcf8
